Job Description

Looking for a Career Counselor to join this dynamic team of individuals making a difference in the lives of young people. PIVOT (Partners in Vocational Training Opportunities) is a community of 60 non-residential young adults (16 – 24 years) learning career and technical training, earning their high school diploma or GED, and preparing for their careers. PIVOT teaches independent living skills and focuses on a developing a positive learning environment and utilizing a trauma informed approach to student services. The PIVOT program is located in the Montgomery Park building in Northwest Portland. It’s a satellite center connected to the Springdale Job Corps (Troutdale, OR).

The Career Counselor is responsible for working directly with young adults in supporting them while in the program and helping prepare them for transition to careers.

The ideal candidate will:

  • exercise strong written and oral communication
  • interact effectively with a diverse population
  • work with students using a strengths based approach
  • be familiar with the tenets of Trauma Informed Care
  • exercise creative collaboration with outside resources to support students with challenges including, but not limited to, child care, housing, learning challenges, alcohol and drug history, low self-esteem
  • be detail oriented and able to maintain accurate and timely documentation
  • be resilient, positive and passionate about making a difference in our community

Duties: 

  • Maintain a case load of up to 60 students. Conduct continuous evaluation of student progress.
  • Develop positive and professional rapport with students while providing support, encouragement and accountability as they progress through the program. Provide personal and social adjustment counseling on an individual and group basis. 
  • Strategize as part of a student’s career management team assist student in meeting challenges, provide support and recommend courses of action. 
  • Assist with student attendance concerns, be an integral part of the student retention team. 
  • Maintain documentation as required in the form of case notes, attendance interventions and supports. Maintain compliance with governmental and corporate documentation regulations.

Starting salary: $36,000.00

Skill Requirements

Requirements: Bachelors degree in social work, counseling or related field, and one year experience in counseling or related field. Computer proficient. Valid drivers license in the state of residence with an acceptable driving record.
