Job Description
As a member of the Engineering Department, the Technical Purchasing Manager is responsible for all purchasing of onboard deck and engine (technical) equipment, including bid research, selection, order placement, and shipping coordination.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
To perform this job successfully, the employee must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Additional duties may be added or assigned at any time.

Purchasing:
• Fulfills approved vessel requisitions for technical equipment & consumables.
• Coordinates with Ports & Logistics Manager in shipping & receiving of purchased items, including consolidation and transshipment tasks in conjunction with other supplies.
• Provides equipment research assistance and purchasing support as needed for deck and engineering departments, working closely with Director of Technical and Port Engineers.
• Purchases shipyard supplies and other equipment and consumables as directed (to support balance of purchasing team members).
• Researches and develops new suppliers, vendors, and sources to improve overall purchasing support for Lindblad Expeditions vessels (including international and Internet sources).
• Provides additional support for other Purchasing Managers as directed.

Computer operations:
• Provides in-house support and serves as team leader for computerized requisition and purchasing system in NS-5. Includes training of new users (office and vessel personnel).
• Maintains associated technical parts and equipment databases, and coordinates upgrades and maintenance of existing systems.
• Monitors submitted requisitions, and coordinates with department heads and other office staff to insure timely review/approval and closing of vessel requisitions in NS-5.

Administrative:
• Tracks and processes packing slips and communicates with vendors and vessel personnel to insure purchases are received as ordered and pricing matches purchase order commitment(s).
• Reviews and approves invoices, and follows through with vendors to rectify pricing or payment term discrepancies, filing and photocopying (A/P vendor files).
• Communicates with onboard personnel regarding requisition status and anticipated delivery details.
• Supports other purchasing & port operations personnel to provide departmental support and back up.



Skill Requirements
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Experience
Previous experience in the marine industry and/or shipboard experience required. Purchasing experience strongly preferred. International shipping and receiving experience also preferred.

Communication Skills
Using the English language, this person must have an ability to read, write, and comprehend order specifications, catalogues, invoices, correspondence, and memos. Must also possess the ability to effectively communicate--both in writing and orally--with a professional demeanor. Sound yet fair negotiating skills desired.

Other Skills/Abilities
Strong skills in data base management, data entry, typing, and organizational filing.
Proficient computer skills in the Windows operating system, including both word-processing and spreadsheet applications.
Strong skills in time management, handling multiple tasks, setting priorities, and meeting deadlines.
The ability to work independently as well as with others in a team environment.
Occasional travel may be required.
Must possess or be able to obtain a valid driver's license.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk and hear. The employee will also be required to write and type. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
