All instructors are degreed (MFA or BFA) and working artists, and are personally supervised and trained in the AFKS curriculum by Dolly Meymand.
The curriculum is process-oriented, and projects are never duplicated. The emphasis is on developing drawing skills, color theory, techniques of painting, and the principles of sculpting, all in various media. Contour and gesture drawing is taught, as well as landscape, wildlife, and some figurative art.

Founded in the early development of tribal child welfare programs which followed the passage of the Indian Child Welfare Act of 1978, NICWA was established with the following stated purposes which were reaffirmed in 1992 and again in 1997:

• To promote safe, healthy and culturally strong environments for Indian children.
• To promote a positive sense of heritage among Indian children.
• To promote the spiritual strength of Indian children.
• To advocate for and facilitate the proper implementation of the Indian Child Welfare Act.
• To provide a clear voice for the needs of Indian children and Indian child welfare (ICW) programs.
• To provide coordination and information sharing among Indian child welfare programs.
• To promote the provision of effective services to Indian children by child welfare workers.
• To provide education and leadership opportunities for Indian child welfare workers.
• To develop resources for programs relating to Indian children, youth and families.
• To obtain and disburse funds for specific projects related to Indian child welfare.
• To provide technical assistance on Indian child welfare matters.
AUDIENCE
NICWA defines its primary constituency as tribal and urban Indian social service programs that serve Indian children and families and, in particular, the staff people who work with Indian children and families. We accomplish our mission through people who share our mission and vision, but who work on the front lines.

The government requires an annual internal audit which is quite expensive, but we have always incurred the expense because we think it is important to provide the maximum number of choices to our clients."
